Have you ever heard the phrase, “Do what you love, and you'll never work a day again in your life.”?
I think that is true, to some extent. The real story is not that you won't work, but that it doesn't feel as much like work when you are doing what you love.
That's why you'll find that most of the top people in any field enjoy what they are doing. They got to the top because they weren't watching the minutes tick by on the clock until they could run from the office at the end of the day. They consistently outwork and outperform others because they enjoy what they are doing!
It will always take some discipline to become great at something, but it takes a whole lot less discipline to do something that is enjoyable than it does to do something you hate doing!
It's like this blog post and the hundreds of articles I've written on this site and others over the past few years. I enjoy writing and helping others, and even find it therapeutic at times. So, when I'm having a bit of a sleepless night, guess what I'm doing? I'm up writing or coming up with new ideas at 3AM while my 5 kids, wife, competition, and maybe you are sleeping.
What could you imagine yourself doing at 3AM for free that people would be willing to pay for? Do that, and the money will most likely take care of itself in the long run. At least that's what I keep telling myself about this blog…hey you never know, maybe some of my fans will at least leave me a tip from time to time.
Be a little careful about relying on whatever you enjoy as your only source of income, even fun things tend to start to feel like work eventually once it is required that you do it to survive! There are always things that are not so fun to go along with any hobby once it becomes an income source like taxes, paperwork, and trying to comply with regulations.
Bottom line, you'll still find yourself doing some work you don't enjoy even if you love what you are doing, but you're a lot more likely to succeed than if you are doing stuff you hate to do!
