Career and Personality Testing From The Personal Growth Channel
Last month, we announced that our career and personality testing suite is now officially open to all paid members. This is the same suite of testing products I have been using for a long time in my private coaching practice to help people find a career that they can get excited and feel passionate about.
I thought it might be interesting to go back through the test myself and share some of the results with you so that you can get an idea of just what this can do for you.
Logging In and Taking The Test
When you first log in, you're prompted for some basic information, and then go right into the questions. It took me about a half hour to get through the whole test, a little longer than I remembered, but the extensive battery of questions made me feel good that my career matches would be better suited to me. Questions went quickly though, most were obviously judging my preferences like if I prefer to work outside or if I prefer an office environment.
I went ahead and completed the personality test as well which is factored into the results, and it was interesting to see how my matches changed once I completed that.
The thing I really love about this tool is that it returns a list of careers matched to your preferences along with average salaries, average job satisfaction, educational requirements, and more. With over 800 careers in the database, there aren't many fields that aren't represented.
If you want to learn more about a career, click on the title and you'll get a screen like the one below where you can learn more and find out how to start on this career path.
You can also drill into your personality test results. In my case, I got the “Humanitarian” with my strongest trait being “Enterprising,” and second strongest being “Social.” I find it a little funny that my second strongest trait is social when I'm listed as an Introvert on the MBTI scale which is another famous personality test.
It makes sense though when considering this is testing for career compatibility. I enjoy my alone time which is probably why the Myers-Briggs test tagged me as an Introvert, but when it comes to work, I'm a pretty outgoing guy. Like the DISC test, this test points out that I am very social under the right conditions, even if I'd rather read a book at the end of the day than go out partying.
Typically I would help my clients analyze their results and come up with a plan to transition from what they are doing today to where they want to be in the future. Making more money, feeling challenged, or even going into business for themselves are common objectives, and this test can help show if this is going to be a good fit before someone makes a major change in their life.
In this case, I found myself asking if where I was headed was in line with my strengths, and decided as a small business owner who is in the business of helping others, I'm exactly where I need to be.
